Gold Panning Excursions in the Dominican Republic
by Tom Thomason
(Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic)
In the mountain town of Jarabacoa there is a unique excursion that takes their guests into the surrounding areas in search of Gold.
Gold has been found in Hispaniola since before Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1492. The Taino Indians used the beautiful yellow metal for making Jewelery and religious ornaments. It was in such abundance that Columbus was shipping it back to Spain. That was century's ago, but there is still plenty to be found in the creeks and streams of this country.
Jarabacoa Gold Company has over 20 years experience prospecting and panning for the elusive gold metal both in the USA and the Dominican Republic. With several "proven" sites, these trips are not only fun, but can be rewarding as well. On most trips, all guests find Gold. Sometimes as much as a few grams. With the world market price of Gold at over $1000. an ounce, it can be like taking the trip and getting paid to do it. Guests get to keep all the Gold that they find.
Most of the sites do involve hiking to get there, but the scenic views on the way make it worth the effort. Most tourists never get to venture into these areas where the water in the streams is crystal clear and the air has that fresh "mountain" smell. Great photo opportunities as well.
Other excursions are available in the Jarabacoa area like white water rafting, horseback riding, hiking, Visiting the many waterfalls, jeep tours and sightseeing. Lodging is available in the area at all price points to suit the luxurious traveler or the budget minded.
Gold panning trips are for 1/2 day, full day and can be customized to fit any need. Some locations are more suitable for the experienced hikers as others are just a short, easy hike to the location.
All equipment is provided, lunch on full day trips and panning instruction by our experienced guides for the novice. It is recommended that guests bring a change of clothes as they may get wet as well as water, and insect repellent. Some days the bugs are out.
One warning: Gold fever may set in.
